On 18 May, 1978, the anglophone parish of the Sign of the Theotokos was founded in Montréal (Archdiocese of Canada, The Orthodox Church in America, OCA) by the Priest John Tkachuk.
Printemps, 1981 : Deux paroissiens du Signe de la Théotokos, Steven Bigham et Yves Drolet, fondent la « Fraternité Orthodoxe de Saint-Jean-le-Précurseur », dans le but de faire connaître l’Orthodoxie au Canada français.
In the spring of 1981, 2 parishioners of the Sign of the Theotokos, Steven Bigham and Yves Drolet, founded the “Orthodox Fraternity of Saint John the Forerunner”, with the aim of making Orthodoxy known in French-speaking Canada.

Septembre 1981 : Steven Bigham part pour une année d’études au Séminaire Saint-Vladimir, situé à Crestwood, New York, en vue d’être ordonné prêtre.

1982 : La fraternité organise deux autres conférences (données par le Père Georges Chişca, recteur de la paroisse roumaine Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Montréal), et puis une retraite au couvent des Soeurs Recluses Missionnaires à Rivière-des-Prairies par le Père Alexandre Schmemann).
In 1982, the fraternity organised 2 other conferences (given by Father George Chişca, rector of the Romanian Parish of Saint John the Baptist in Montréal), and then a retreat by Father Alexander Schmemann of Saint Vladimir’s Seminary, in the convent of the Recluse Missionary Sisters in Rivière-des-Prairies.

In addition to the Bigham and Drolet families, the small French-speaking group at the parish of The Sign of the Theotokos had 2 French-speaking families (Rigny and Gourvil), who returned to France the following year.

On 31 October, 1982, Deacon Steven Bigham was ordained to the Holy Priesthood by Metropolitan Theodosius (Lazor) at the parish of The Sign of the Theotokos in Montréal.

Parallèlement, le hiéromoine Irénée (Rochon) revient à Montréal après avoir passé quelques années à Genève, Suisse et à Lyon, France, comme recteur des paroisses francophones de l’Église russe hors frontières (ÉORHF). Converti à l’orthodoxie dès 1967, le Hiéromoine Irénée a reçu sa formation monastique au monastère de la Sainte Trinité à Jordanville, New York. Il organise des liturgies dominicales hebdomadaires en français à la chapelle de la résidence de l’archevêque Vitaly (Oustinov) de l’Église russe hors-frontières, avec un petit groupe de Québécois qui se convertissent.
At the same time, the Hieromonk Irénée (Rochon) returned to Montréal after spending a few years in Geneva, Switzerland, and Lyon, France as rector of the French-speaking parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR). Father Irénée (Rochon) converted to Orthodoxy in 1967. Father Irénée had received his monastic formation at the Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville (New York). He organised weekly Sunday Divine Liturgies in French at the chapel of the residence of Archbishop Vitaly (Ustinov) of the ROCOR, with a small group of Quebeckers (Québecois) who embraced the Orthodox Faith.

Le 8 septembre 1983 : La première paroisse francophone de l’ÉOA est fondée à Montréal sous la direction du Père Stéphane Bigham. La paroisse Saint-Benoît-de-Nursie s’installe pendant deux mois dans une église antiochienne, puis retourne à la paroisse anglophone du Signe de la Théotokos.
On 8 September, 1983, the first francophone parish of the OCA was founded in Montréal under the direction of Father Steven Bigham. The parish of Saint Benoît de Nursie settled for 2 months in an Antiochian parish, and then returned to the English-language parish of the Sign of the Theotokos.
Le 8 septembre 1984 : La paroisse Saint-Benoît quitte la chapelle de la paroisse du Signe de la Théotokos et s’installe au Quartier Saint-Michel (boulevard Pie-IX) à Montréal. La paroisse se consacre à la diffusion d’écrits orthodoxes en français.
8 September, 1984 : The parish of Saint Benoît left the chapel of the parish of the Sign of the Theotokos and settled in the Saint Michel district (on boulevard Pie-IX) in Montréal. The parish devoted itself to the dissemination of Orthodox writings in the French language.
Mai 1987 : Le hiéromoine Irénée (Rochon) et le hiérodiacre Marc (Pierre) se joignent au diocèse canadien de l’ÉOA, avec une partie des laïcs de la mission francophone Saint-Grégoire-le-Grand de Montréal.
In May, 1987, the Hieromonk Irénée (Rochon) and the Hierodeacon Marc (Pierre), along with a part of the laity of the Francophone Mission of Saint Gregory the Great in Montréal, entered the Canadian diocese of the Orthodox Church in America.

On 13 June, 1987, Metropolitan Theodosius (Lazor), Bishop Nathaniel (Popp) and Bishop Boris (Geeza) ordained the Hieromonk Seraphim (Storheim) to the Holy Episcopate as Bishop of Edmonton and Vicar-Bishop for Canada.
Juin 1990 : La paroisse quitte son local exigu situé au sous-sol d’un immeuble résidentiel du quartier Saint-Michel pour s’installer dans des locaux plus spacieux loués à la Basilique catholique romaine Saint-Patrice au centre-ville de Montréal.
In June, 1990, the parish left its tiny room located in the basement of a residential building in the Saint Michel district to move into more spacious premises rented at the Saint Patrick Roman Catholic Basilica in downtown Montréal.
Le 2 janvier 1991 : Monseigneur Séraphim fonde la Fraternité Missionnaire Saint-Séraphim-de-Sarov, qui regroupe les moines au Québec et d'autres régions du Canada qui font partie de l’ÉOA. Ce n'était pas un monastère réel en tant que tel, mais plutôt un arrangement familial informel.
2 January, 1991: Bishop Seraphim founded the Missionary Brotherhood of Saint Seraphim of Sarov, which grouped the francophone monks in Québec and other parts of Canada who were part of the OCA. It was not an actual monastery as such, but rather, an informal family arrangement.

Le 1 septembre 1983 : La paroisse Saint-Grégoire-le-Grand s’installe dans une maison louée par le Père Irénée rue Saint-Denis, puis en juillet 1984 emménage dans un local commercial loué rue Sauvé. Des Russes et des Roumains de la cathédrale russe Saint-Nicolas se joignent aux convertis et la paroisse atteint une trentaine de membres. Un paroissien, Claude Pierre, est ordonné diacre (Père Marc). Malgré l’absence de communion entre les deux juridictions russes, la paroisse maintient des liens non officieux avec la paroisse du Signe de la Théotokos.
On 1 September, 1983, the parish of Saint Gregory the Great moved into a house rented by Father Irénée (Rochon) on Saint Denis Street. Then, in July, 1984, the parish moved into a rented commercial space on Sauvé Street. Russians and Romanians of the Russian Cathedral of Saint Nicholas joined the converts, and the parish reached about 30 members. A parishioner, Claude Pierre, was ordained to the Holy Diaconate and tonsured to be a monk, with the name Marc. Despite the lack of communion between the 2 “Russian jurisdictions”, the parish maintained informal links with the parish of The Sign of the Theotokos.
Mai 1987 : Inquiets de l’orientation prise par l’Église russe hors frontières depuis que l’archevêque Vitaly a été élu primat, le Père Irénée et le Père Marc décident de se joindre à l’Église orthodoxe en Amérique. La majorité des convertis les suivent, tandis que les Russes et les Roumains demeurent membres de l’Église russe hors frontières et conservent la charte légale de Saint-Grégoire-le-Grand.
In May, 1987, being concerned about the orientation taken by the ROCOR since Archbishop Vitaly was elected to be the First Hierarch, Father Irénée (Rochon) and Father Marc (Pierre) decided to join the Orthodox Church in America. The majority of the converts followed them, while the Russians and Romanians remained members of the ROCOR and retained the legal charter of the Saint Gregory the Great community.

Le 14 septembre 1988 : Inauguration de la chapelle de la Mission Saint-Constantin-et-Sainte-Hélène, située Sherbrooke ouest, sous la juridiction de l’ancien Exarchat du Patriarcat d’Alexandrie (juridiction non-canonique), par le Père Nicolas Giroux.
On 14 September, 1988, the chapel of the Saints Constantine and Helen Mission was established. It was located on Sherbrooke Street West, and it was under the jurisdiction of the former Exarchate of the Patriarchate of Alexandria (non-canonical jurisdiction). Its pastor was Father Nicolas Giroux.

Septembre 1991 : Suite à des difficultés internes, et à la diminution du nombre de fidèles et des revenus, le Père Stéphane interrompt les activités de la paroisse.
In September, 1991, due to internal difficulties, and to the decrease in the number of faithful and the decrease in income, Father Steven paused the activities of the parish.
Le 1 janvier 1992 : Monseigneur Séraphim confie la paroisse à la Fraternité Missionnaire de Saint-Séraphim-de-Sarov (Père Irénée et Père Marc), et le Père Marc, ordonné prêtre le 14 avril 1991, en devient le recteur. La paroisse s’installe temporairement au sous-sol d’une maison privée.
On 1 January, 1992, Bishop Seraphim entrusted the parish to the Missionary Brotherhood of Saint Seraphim of Sarov (Father Irénée and Father Marc). Father Marc, who had been ordained to the Holy Priesthood on 14 April, 1991, became the rector of the parish. The parish settled temporarily in the basement of a private house.
Juin 1992 : La paroisse loue un petit local à l’Église anglicane Saint-Ignace à Montréal-Nord.

Août-septembre 1993 : Le hiéromoine Cyrille (Bradette) se joint à l’Église orthodoxe en Amérique et à la Fraternité missionnaire de Saint-Séraphim-de-Sarov. La paroisse s’installe dans la chapelle qu’il a aménagée au sous-sol de l’Église anglicane Saint-Jean-l’Évangéliste. Par la suite Monseigneur Séraphim ordonne père Cyrille au diaconat et à la prêtrise (ordination canonique).
In August-September, 1993, the Hieromonk Cyrille (Bradette) joined the Orthodox Church in America and the Missionary Brotherhood of Saint Seraphim of Sarov. The parish settled in the chapel which he arranged in the basement of the Anglican Church of Saint John the Evangelist. Subsequently, Bishop Seraphim ordained the Monk Cyrille (Bradette) to the Holy Diaconate and then to the Holy Priesthood, because the ordinations had to be canonical.

Approche à la paroisse/Approach to the parish
Le 2 février 1997 : Monseigneur Séraphim ordonne Gregory Nimijean diacre à Saint-Benoît et l’affecte à la paroisse.
On 2 February, 1997, Bishop Seraphim ordained Gregory Nimijean to the Holy Diaconate in the Church of Saint Benoît, and he assigned him to the parish.
Le 19 août 1997 : Monseigneur Séraphim transforme la Fraternité Missionnaire de Saint-Séraphim-de-Sarov en Communauté Missionnaire de Saint-Séraphim-de-Sarov (dont une partie devient plus tard par la suite la Communauté monastique de Saint-Séraphim-de-Sarov), et la rattache à la Chapelle de la Transfiguration à Rawdon, Québec.
Le Père Irénée demeure higoumène de la Communauté Missionnaire et recteur de la Paroisse Saint-Benoît.
On 19 August, 1997, Bishop Seraphim transformed the Missionary Brotherhood of Saint Seraphim of Sarov into the Missionary Community of Saint Seraphim of Sarov (a part of which later became the Monastic Community of Saint Seraphim of Sarov), and he attached it to the Chapel of the Transfiguration in Rawdon, Québec.
Father Irénée continued both as Igumen of the Missionary Community, and rector of the parish of Saint Benoît.

Le 14 septembre 2003, jour de la fête de l’Exaltation de la précieuse et vivifiante Croix, plus de 40 paroissiens et amis de la paroisse Saint-Benoît-de-Nursie de Montréal ont effectué un pèlerinage d’un jour au monastère grec de la Panagia Parigoritissa (de la Vierge Consolatrice) à Brownsburg (Québec), près de Lachute à environ une heure de route au nord de Montréal, pour rendre grâce dans l’allégresse pour le ministère de son recteur, l’higoumène Irénée (Rochon), qui a célébré le 25e anniversaire de son ordination à la prêtrise le jour de la Transfiguration (ancien calendrier), le 19 août. La plupart sont arrivés à l’Orthros chanté par la communauté monastique et célébré par le chapelain, le père Daniel Giubega. Tandis que la superbe chapelle ornée de fresques se remplissait de pèlerins et d’invités, notre clergé a été gentiment invité à concélébrer la Divine Liturgie. L’higoumène Irénée, le hiéromoine Marc (Pierre) le hiérodiacre Amvrosi (Mlodzik) et le diacre Juan-Pablo Ruiz-Gomar ont donc rejoint le père Daniel autour de l’autel richement paré. À la demande de la mère higoumène, la Divine Liturgie a été célébrée en plusieurs langues, le français arrivant en second juste après le grec. Un moment mémorable fut, à la fin de la Divine Liturgie, l’Élévation de la Croix, sur sa couronne de basilic odorant, des pots de ce même basilic parfumant toute la chapelle. La Divine Liturgie fut suivie du dîner — pour certains dans le réfectoire des moniales, accompagné de lectures appropriées à la fête solennelle du jour, et pour les autres à l’extérieur, autour de tables à pique-nique. Vers la fin de l’après-midi, les paroissiens se sont réunis autour du père Irénée pour lui lire des hommages et lui offrir des présents et d’autres témoignages de leur soutien et de leur affection indéfectibles. On 14 September, 2003, the day of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-giving Cross, more than 40 parishioners and friends of the Saint-Benoît-de-Nursie parish in Montréal made a one-day pilgrimage to the Greek monastery of "Panagia Parigoritissa" (of the Virgin Consolator) in Brownsburg (Québec), near Lachute (about an hour's drive north of Montréal), to give joyful thanks for the pastoral service its rector, Igumen Irénée (Rochon). He had celebrated the 25th anniversary of his ordination to the Holy Priesthood on the day of the Transfiguration (old calendar), 19 August. Most of them arrived at the Orthros (Matins) sung by the community women monastics, which was celebrated by the chaplain, Father Daniel Giubega. While the magnificent chapel decorated with frescoes filled with pilgrims and guests, the parish clergy were kindly invited to concelebrate the Divine Liturgy. Igumen Irénée, Hieromonk Marc (Pierre), Hierodeacon Amvrosi (Mlodzik) and Deacon Juan-Pablo Ruiz-Gomar therefore joined Father Daniel around the richly adorned Holy Table. At the request of the Abbess, Mother Thecla, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated in several languages, with French coming second in quantity just after Greek. At the end of the Divine Liturgy, there was a memorable moment at the Elevation of the Holy Cross, on its wreath of fragrant basil, with pots of this same basil perfuming the whole chapel. The Divine Liturgy was followed by dinner - for some, in the refectory of the nuns, accompanied by readings appropriate to the solemn feast of the day, and for the others outside, around tables in picnic style. Towards the end of the afternoon, the parishioners gathered around Father Irénée to read him tributes and to offer him presents and other testimonies of their support and their unfailing affection. — 'Recent celebrations in two Montréal parishes : St-Benoît-de-Nursie' in "Canadian Orthodox Messenger" (Spring, 2004)], pp. 11-12.

Visite à Montréal du Métropolite Tikhon (Mollard) / Visit of Metropolitan Tikhon (Mollard) to Montréal, 2013
Du 13 au 14 juillet 2013, le métropolite Tikhon (Mollard), primat de l’Église orthodoxe en Amérique, a fait une visite pastorale à Montréal. C'était le premier voyage de Vladyka à l’extérieur des États-Unis depuis son élection en tant que Métropolite de toute l’Amérique et du Canada en novembre, 2012.
On 13-14 July, 2013, Metropolitan Tikhon (Mollard), the Primate of the Orthodox Church in America, made a pastoral visit to Montréal. This was Vladyka’s first trip outside the USA since his election as Metropolitan of All-America and Canada in November, 2012.
Il y avait 2 raisons officielles pour cette visite : 30 ans de l’établissement de la paroisse Saint-Benoît-de-Nursie - la première paroisse orthodoxe francophone d’Amérique du Nord ; et le 35e anniversaire de l’ordination au sacerdoce de l’évêque Irénée (Rochon) de Québec, à ce temps-là, administrateur de l’Archidiocèse du Canada.
There were 2 official reasons for this visit : the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Saint Benoît de Nursie (Saint Benedict of Nursia) parish - the first French-speaking Orthodox parish in North America ; and the 35th anniversary of the ordination to the priesthood of Bishop Irénée (Rochon) of Québec City, at that time Administrator of the Archdiocese of Canada.
Comme l’a mentionné Vladyka Tikhon, la Divine Liturgie actuelle était spéciale pour lui pour une autre raison importante. Bien qu'il soit de naissance à moitié français, et il a passé la majeure partie de sa jeunesse en France, c’était la première fois qu’il a eu l’occasion de servir la Divine Liturgie en français du début jusqu'à la fin.
As mentioned by Vladyka Tikhon, the current Divine Liturgy was special for him for another important reason. Although by birth he is half-French, and he spent most of his youth in France, this was the first time he had an opportunity to serve the Divine Liturgy in French from beginning to end.
À la fin de la Divine Liturgie, Vladyka a remis les médailles et « gramotas » (certificat de reconnaissance) de Saint Tikhon à quatre des membres les plus anciens de la chorale qui avait participé directement à l’établissement de la paroisse depuis 1983. Il a remercié également Catherine Mitchell pour ses nombreuses années d’un travail généreux au profit de la paroisse. Après la Divine Liturgie, tous ceux qui étaient présents ont été invités à un modeste repas amical organisé par les paroissiens.
At the end of the Divine Liturgy, before the dismissal, Vladyka awarded Tikhon’s medals and "gramotas" (certificate of recognition) to four of the oldest members of the choir who were directly involved in the establishment of the parish, since 1983. He also thanked Catherine Mitchell for her many years of selfless work for the benefit of the parish. After the Divine Liturgy, all who were present were invited to a modest friendly dinner, organised by the parishioners.
Comme on l’a alors révélé, il y avait une autre occasion de célébration, cette fois moins formelle. C’était l’anniversaire du métropolite Tikhon le lendemain, le 15 juillet. Le chœur a chanté non seulement « De nombreuses années » en trois langues, mais aussi la chanson d’anniversaire américaine traditionnelle. Pendant ce temps, les paroissiens ont mangés un gâteau d’anniversaire avec un nombre indéterminé de bougies.
As it was then revealed, there was another occasion for celebration, this time less formal. It was Metropolitan Tikhon’s birthday the next day, on 15 July. The choir sang not only “God grant you many years” in three-languages, but also the traditional American birthday song. Meanwhile, the parishioners ate birthday cake with an undetermined number of candles.

Le 24 juin, 2017, l’archevêque Irénée (Rochon) a célébré la fête de la Nativité de saint Jean-Baptiste à l’église Saint-Benoît-de-Nursie (Montréal) avec l’assistance de Son Eminence l’archêveque Job (Getcha) de Telemessos. L'archevêque Job est le représentant du Patriarcat œcuménique au Conseil mondial des églises à Genève en Suisse. Il est également professeur à l'Institut des études supérieures du Centre orthodoxe du Patriarcat œcuménique à Chambésy-Genève.
On 24 June, 2017, Archbishop Irénée (Rochon) celebrated the Feast of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist at Saint Benoît de Nursie Church (Montréal). Archbishop Job (Getcha) of Telemessos served together with him. Archbishop Job is the representative of the Ecumenical Patriarchate at the World Council of Churches in Geneva, Switzerland. He is also a teacher at the Institute of Post-Graduate Studies of the Orthodox Centre of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Chambésy-Geneva.

From downtown Montréal, drive on René-Lévesque Boulevard and take an exit towards Highway #136 West (Boulevard Ville-Marie). Keep to the right, and follow the signs for Autoroute #15 North (Boulevard Décarie). Drive on Autoroute #15 ; and after Rue de la Savane, continue straight on. Do not take any exits to the left or right. Continue on Boulevard Décarie, now in Saint-Laurent. Take the exit to the right on Rue Dion. At Avenue Saint-Croix, turn left, and drive on Avenue Saint-Croix. After Rue de l'Église the church-complex destination will be on the right.
