Although the main prehistory of this parish is rooted in that of the [[Winnipeg MB Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Cathedral 1904 |Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church]] at the corner of Manitoba Avenue and McKenzie Street, in [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winnipeg Winnipeg], [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manitoba Manitoba], [https://www.britannica.com/place/Canada Canada], there was a considerable amount of influence also from the very great majority of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainians Ukrainians] in Winnipeg who had various other opinions, such as described in the prehistories of [[Winnipeg MB Saint Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Sobor 1923 |Saint Mary the Protectress Sobor]] and of [[Winnipeg MB Saint Michael Ukrainian (Bukovynian) Orthodox Church 1918 |Saint Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Church]].  A very large number of the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Introduction_to_Orthodox_Christianity Ukrainian Orthodox] in Winnipeg had originated (directly or by ancestry) in the Province of [https://www.britannica.com/place/Bukovina Bukovina] in what is now [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Ukraine Western Ukraine], but which at that time belonged to the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austria-Hungary Austro-Hungarian Empire] (and previously to [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moldavia Moldavia]/[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romania Romania]).  

In the aftermath of the 1917 [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_Revolution Bolshevik Revolution] against the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Empire Russian Empire], there resulted a long period of instability in [https://www.britannica.com/place/North-America North America], and Winnipeg was no exception.  The [https://orthodoxwiki.org/What_is_Orthodoxy Orthodox Christians] became divided by language and ethnicity, by politics, and sometimes by personalities.  The 1920s and 1930s were particularly difficult in this regard.  Nevertheless, as time progressed, and new communities were established, the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Orthodox_Church Orthodox Christian Church] became more visible in the city of Winnipeg.  

The church building, which the new community eventually purchased, had formerly been the [https://main.lib.umanitoba.ca/mcdougall-memorial-methodist-church-fonds McDougall Memorial Methodist Church].  This solid brick structure had been constructed in 1891.  The architectural style is [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_Revival_architecture_in_Canada Norman-Gothic], which was typical of Canadian [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Church_of_Canada Protestant] buildings of that period. It was named for the western Canadian [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methodist_Church_(Canada) Methodist] missionary [http://www.mhs.mb.ca/docs/people/mcdougall_gm.shtml George M McDougall].  At one time, a creek ran alongside the parish location, and it delineated [http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/thomas-douglas-5th-earl-of-selkirk/ Lord Selkirk]’s holdings.

On 1 March, 1931, a meeting was held at the home of Stephan Piseski.  The 29 faithful people who met there were from a group of immigrants and pioneers who had emigrated from the territory of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bukovina Bukovina] (Bucovina) in [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romania Romania] (the northern part of that province [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molotov–Ribbentrop_Pact was taken] by [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Stalin Mr. J Stalin] and joined to [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukraine Ukraine] during [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II World War II], in 1940).  Either their parents or grandparents had come from this mixed [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanian_language Romanian]- and [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_language Ukrainian]-speaking region, or they had themselves emigrated from there.  Because of various circumstances, they were in search of their own house of worship. The reason for the naming of this Temple is directly related to the land of origin of the parishioners.  Saint John (Ioan, Ivan) Suchavsky is also known as [http://www.johnsanidopoulos.com/2009/06/saint-john-new-great-martyr-of-suceava.html Saint John the New], and this New-Great-Martyr’s [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Incorruptibility#:~:text=In%20the%20Orthodox%20tradition%2C%20the%20bodies%20of%20incorrupt,demonstrate%20that%20the%20reposed%20individual%20is%20a%20saint. incorrupt] holy [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Relics relics] rest at the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_John_the_New_Monastery Monastery of Saint John the New] in the city of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suceava Suceava], [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romania Romania].

The community of Saint John Suchavsky was established mostly from people who originally had been part of the [[Winnipeg MB Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Cathedral 1904 |Holy Trinity Cathedral]] parish on Manitoba Avenue.  Different from other Ukrainian Orthodox parishes in Winnipeg at the time, the parish of Saint John Suchavsky managed to be established as a canonical Orthodox community, albeit that they then belonged to the canonical [http://www.encyclopediaofukraine.com/display.asp?linkpath=pages%5CU%5CK%5CUkrainianOrthodoxChurchofAmerica.htm Ukrainian Orthodox Church of America].

The purchase of the church building in the 30s was a major challenge.  The roof had to be replaced, and an [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Altar Altar] area constructed.  The interior and exterior of the building needed to be modified considerably in order to conform to the requirements of worship in the Orthodox Church.  The purchase of the building cost $5,000.00.

The congregation struggled in its efforts to bring in much-needed funds through loans ($1,000.00), the sale of shares, and through personal contributions ($1,000.00) for an initial down-payment and to fulfil the mortgage commitment ($3,000.00).  To raise additional funds, teas and socials were held in the homes of members, and door to door canvassing was undertaken.  

Although many of the artifacts used in the new Temple were made from crude materials, they were nevertheless created with much reverence and care.  The final touch for the completion of the interior of the Temple was provided by the women through donations of hand-embroidered linens and scarves.  These were used as covers for [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Analogion analogions], and for hanging around certain [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Iconography icons].  

The [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Altar Holy Table] was constructed by Vasyl Hordy.  When it became possible to construct the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Iconostasis iconostas], this work was done by George Billas, and the first icons were prepared by Hnat Sych.

Dorothy Hardy (Hordy), the daughter of Vasyl Hordy, eventually became the choir director in the parish.  She served in this capacity for many decades.  She served for many decades also as the president of the parish.  

The next steps, more specific to the spiritual needs, involved the confirmation of the jurisdictional links of the parish and the engagement of a priest to serve in the Cathedral.

==Ukrainian Orthodox Church of America, 1931==

Later in 1931, the parish was accepted under the [http://www.encyclopediaofukraine.com/display.asp?linkpath=pages%5CU%5CK%5CUkrainianOrthodoxChurchofAmerica.htm Ukrainian Orthodox Church of America], under [http://orthodoxcanada.ca/Bishop_Joseph_(%C5%BDuk) Bishop Joseph (Žuk)] (pronounced “Zhook”) of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey New Jersey], [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States USA].  The Priest A Khrustavka was assigned to serve as the first permanent priest.  He commenced his service in December, 1931.

In 1933, through the efforts of the Priest John Zazulak and Vasyl Hordy, [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Bells bells] were donated for the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_tower belfry] by the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Pacific_Railway Canadian Pacific Railway].  These remain in the belfry today and they are used on special occasions.  Otherwise, [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_carillon electronic bells] are used (which were donated by Mr. and Mrs. Safriuk).  

In 1937, [http://orthodoxcanada.ca/Metropolitan_Bohdan_(Shpylka) Bishop Bohdan (Shpylka)] succeeded [http://orthodoxcanada.ca/Bishop_Joseph_(%C5%BDuk) Bishop Joseph (Žuk)] as the bishop of the [http://uaocamerica.org/ Ukrainian Orthodox Church of America].  Later, he was elevated to the dignity of metropolitan.  He was, therefore, the bishop of this parish from that year. 

In 1938, the parish’s building complex was expanded to include the parish hall, rectory and residence.  These are behind the Temple itself.  

In 1944, the mortgage was retired, and the parish had clear title to its land and buildings.  

In 1945, work began on constructing the onion-shaped [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dome domes] ([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cupola cupolas]) which now grace the Temple building.  These were completed in 1952.

At the same time as much energy was being focussed on the organisational and physical structure of the building, the spiritual life of the parish was developing.  Evidence of this development as the parish was adjusting to a second and third generation in Canada is the gift of a [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Gospel_Book Gospel Book] in the English language.

During the 1950s and 1960s, under the pastorship of Father John Shwaluk, the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunday_school Church school] and the Ukrainian school were developed, and they began to function on a regular basis.  Later, Carol Hryniuk Adamov and several others became active teachers and served for a long time.  Carol was a competent and experienced teacher.  Her father, Vasyl Hryniuk, was the president of the Brotherhood for many years.  

Quite soon, the choir had grown to a membership of 50.  Their singing was very good, and pleasing.  This choral tradition remains very strong in the parish.  The worship of the Lord with beauty is a priority in the parish.  In addition, the times of social fellowship are filled with singing and other music.  This was especially the case in the very active social club which also developed during these years.  Dances in particular were very popular occasions.

In 1967, [[Metropolitan Andrei (Kuschak)]] became the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in America, and therefore the bishop of this parish.

Although it is a very traditional community, the parish has always been very progressive in its approach to practical matters.  For instance, the parish was for a long time led by Dorothy Hardy.  She served as the president of the community for more than 25 years, beginning in the mid-1970s.  She set the parish on a path that was membership-based.  She and others also understood that it was necessary that the English language be a major part of the parish’s life and worship, and that immigrants had to be constantly involved and assisted.  Hence, parish life became bilingual : English and [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Church_Slavonic Slavonic] in worship, and English and [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_language Ukrainian] at all other functions.  Dorothy was also a worthy example of the effectiveness of a competent woman who led a predominantly male parish council.

==1977, Protopresbyter Michael Pawlyshyn==

In 1977, [https://passages.winnipegfreepress.com/passage-details/id-145510/Michael_Pawlyshyn Protopresbyter Father Michael M Pawlyshyn] became the pastor of the parish.  He served for the next 25 years, and he became a well-known figure in Winnipeg.  He maintained good relationships with the clergy and parishes of other jurisdictions in the city.

The 1980s included major renovations to the Temple building.  These included the painting of the domes and the interior, installation of carpeting, additions to the residence, and installation of central air-conditioning throughout the parish complex (including the Temple).  In addition, through a system of $1,000.00 pledges, the parish was able to acquire the lot adjacent to the existing property.  

In 1987, [[Archbishop Vsevolod (Maidanski) |Bishop Vsevolod (Maidanski)]] became head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in America (UOCA), and therefore the bishop of this parish.  

==Re-naming of the UGOCC, 1990==

In 1990, the “Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church of Canada” was officially renamed “[http://uocc.ca/ The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada]” (UOCC) by an Act of the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parliament_of_Canada Parliament of Canada].

In 1990, the 18th Sobor of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada in [https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/winnipeg Winnipeg], [https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/manitoba Manitoba], decided to enter into Eucharistic Union with the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecumenical_Patriarch_of_Constantinople Ecumenical Patriarchate] in [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constantinople Constantinople] (Istanbul).  This decision also changed the relationship with the other Orthodox dioceses and parishes in Canada in a positive way.

These decisions opened possibilities for the parish of Saint John Suchavsky to be more closely involved with other Ukrainian Orthodox parishes in Winnipeg.  The parish had already long been involved in various inter-Orthodox events in the city.

==Transfer to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada, 1997==

Then, in the 1997, the [https://www.britannica.com/topic/Ecumenical-Patriarchate-of-Constantinople Patriarchate of Constantinople] directed that there be a general reorganisation and regulation of the Ukrainian Orthodox dioceses in North America.  In part because of international regulations, the several Canadian parishes of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the USA (UOCUSA) were joined to the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Ukrainian_Orthodox_Church_of_Canada Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada (UOCC)]. However, this compulsory move also involved the required use of the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_language Ukrainian language] in worship services instead of [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Church_Slavonic Church Slavonic].  This change was difficult for the parishioners to accept and to become comfortable about.  Nevertheless, with time, people became accustomed to the changes.

After 2000, many changes occurred in the life of the parish, primarily because of the influx of a new [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_diaspora immigration from Ukraine].  The newcomers embraced the life of the parish in a serious way as they participated in the various activities in the parish.  They began to be present at the discussion groups and at the weekly fellowship lunches.  The parishioners in general began to be accustomed not only to having a local bishop (rather than one in another country), and also local sister parishes.  It was more like a normal spiritual family this way.  In addition, major physical repairs to the front fence of the Temple were lead by Olga Kyridiak in memory of her husband Walter Kyrdiak.

After 2010, the parish was very glad to have as their pastor [https://www.uocc.ca/clergy/the-very-rev-archpriest-eugene-maximiuk/ Archpriest Eugene Maximiuk], along with his family.  After his arrival, the number of [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Acolyte acolytes] in the Altar grew to more than 8, and the Sunday school became more active.  Major fundraising was required because of the pressing need to replace the boiler for the heating-system.  Considerable help was obtained through the [https://www.cropofoundation.org/ Cropo Foundation], and through the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Winnipeg_Foundation Winnipeg Foundation] for this purpose.  Associated with this, the parishioners followed the example set by system of leadership pledges in the 1980s, and a Founder’s Circle was established in order to supplement the funds raised for replacing the boiler.  

In 2015, the Archpriest Eugene Maximiuk was transferred away from this parish in order to take up the responsibility of being the pastor of the cathedral parish.  This transfer caused great sadness amongst the faithful people.

He served in this parish for 2 years, but he then became ill and fell asleep in the Lord on 9 May, 2017.  His funeral was served on 15-16 May, 2017 in this Temple.  The services were led by [[Metropolitan Yurij (Kalistchuk)]] and many other clergy and faithful.

In 2018, the [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OOEew2Belw 100th anniversary of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada] and also of [https://www.uocc.ca/parish/holy-trinity-cathedral-2/ Holy Trinity Cathedral] were marked at an extraordinary sobor (assembly) at the cathedral in [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saskatoon Saskatoon], [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saskatchewan Saskatchewan].

The purpose of the sobor was to [https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox/FMfcgzGxRwxvkcXcZDBxWbrrKQfPcchP?projector=1 celebrate 100 years] of the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Ukrainian_Orthodox_Church_of_Canada Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada].  The celebrations were attended by Ukrainian Orthodox faithful from across Canada and beyond.  

The Sobor began on Thursday, 9 August, 2018, with a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy in the Chapel of [http://orthodoxcanada.ca/Saskatoon_SK_Saint_Petro_Mohyla_Institute_1916 Saint Petro Mohyla Institute], presided by [http://orthodoxcanada.ca/Bishop_Andriy_(Peshko) Bishop Andriy (Peshko)] of the [https://uocceast.ca/ Eastern Eparchy], with the responses sung by the Clergy led by [https://www.uocc.ca/clergy/the-rev-fr-michael-lomaszkiewicz/ Father Michael Lomaszkiewicz].  This was followed by an All-Canada Clergy Conference.

==2020-2021 Coronavirus-19 virus restrictions on parishes==

In early 2020, the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19 Covid-19 virus] made its appearance in Canada, and it quickly became a world-wide [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandemic pandemic].  Because of the rules governing gatherings that were laid down by the provincial and city governments, the parish stopped any further services after 8 March, 2020. Including the rules regarding social distancing, the decreasing numbers permitted for any gathering, and the considerations regarding the health of all concerned, this and other parishes were required to close for a time.  

As elsewhere, there was some controversy about the legal requirements.

==Election of Metropolitan Ilarion (Rudnyk), 2022==

The 24th Sobor of the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Ukrainian_Orthodox_Church_of_Canada Ukrainian Orthodox of Canada] was convened in Edmonton, Alberta, at [http://orthodoxcanada.ca/Edmonton_AB_Saint_John_Ukrainian_Orthodox_Cathedral_1923 Saint John's Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral], 15-19 June, 2022.

In the course of the work of the Sobor, there was the necessary election in order to nominate to the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Holy_Synod Holy Synod] of the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Church_of_Constantinople Church of Constantinople] a candidate for election as Archbishop of [https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/winnipeg Winnipeg] and Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada, who would succeed the Retired [http://orthodoxcanada.ca/Metropolitan_Yurij_(Kalistchuk) Metropolitan Yurij (Kalistchuk)].  There was a consideration of 2 candidates, [http://orthodoxcanada.ca/Archbishop_Job_(Getcha) Archbishop Job (Getcha)] and [http://orthodoxcanada.ca/Metropolitan_Ilarion_II_(Rudnyk) Bishop Ilarion (Rudnyk)].  The final result was the choice came of Bishop Ilarion (Rudnyk).  

The election by the Sobor (Assembly) of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada then had to be confirmed by the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Holy_Synod_of_Constantinople Holy Synod of Constantinople].  Once they had received the nomination from the Sobor of the UOCC, they elected Vladyka Ilarion (Rudnyk).  This election confirmed Vladyka Ilarion in his new responsibility and title.  Thus, Bishop Ilarion (Rudnyk) became Archbishop of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winnipeg Winnipeg] and [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Bishop#Archbishops_and_Metropolitans Metropolitan] of the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_Orthodox_Church_of_Canada Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Canada].

On 29 August, 2022, Vladyka Ilarion (Rudnyk) was at the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fener Phanar] in [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constantinople Constantinople] for the purpose of the first confirmation of the election in June, 2022. However, a previously-existing group of persons (who seem to have been resisting episcopal authority in favour of so-called democracy) began to encourage resistance to this change. ==Saint John’s Church School==

The goal of the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunday_school Church School] has been to bring children into the life of the Church and to make the Church part of the life of the children.  Christian education encompasses every aspect of Orthodox life from home to the Temple.  Dobrodyka Zenovia Maximiuk gave good guidance to the children in their instruction in the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Introduction_to_Orthodox_Christianity Orthodox Christian Faith].  The teaching has been supplemented by the use of stories and craft activities.  The season for teaching in the Church school  is from September to June.

The children prepare annually for the Saint Nicholas concert, and they participate in a ‘wind-up’ at the end of the year.  Until the web-site was discontinued, links were provided for learning about the Orthodox Faith online :

At some time after 1987, the public name of the parish was changed to Saint Ivan Suchavsky, in order to reflect the Ukrainian character.  However, "John" is closer to the name used in Bucovina.
