Both parents were of the old Moscow Fotiev and Yudin families. Vasily Vasilyevich Fotiyev was a theatre critic, actor and director of the Vodnikov Theater. A street in Moscow bears the family name. Once he joined the [https://ru-m-wikipedia-org.translate.goog/wiki/%D0%9D%D0%B0%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B4%D0%BD%D0%BE-%D1%82%D1%80%D1%83%D0%B4%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%BE%D0%B9_%D1%81%D0%BE%D1%8E%D0%B7_%D1%80%D0%BE%D1%81%D1%81%D0%B8%D0%B9%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B8%D1%85_%D1%81%D0%BE%D0%BB%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B0%D1%80%D0%B8%D1%81%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%B2?_x_tr_sl=ru&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=sc National Labour Union] (NTS) in 1946, Father Cyril remained a member until end of his life, and he played a prominent role in this organisation. He did not see any contradiction in combining his pastoral service with his service to Russia in the ranks of the NTS political organisation, and he often stated that about 30 Orthodox priests had gone through the school of the NTS.
