'''Vancouver, BC, Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, 1950'''

==Prehistory==

In 1950, [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vancouver Vancouver], [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Columbia British Columbia], [https://www.britannica.com/place/Canada Canada], welcomed [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archpriest Archpriest] Philemon Gorelik with his family.

Father Philemon Gorelik was originally from [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belarus Byelorus], where he had been ordained to the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Presbyter Holy Priesthood] by [http://www.rocorstudies.org/church-people/lives-of-bishops/2012/08/01/metropolitan-panteleimon-rozhnovskii-of-minsk-and-byelorussia/ Metropolitan Panteleimon (Rozhnovskii)] (1867-1950) of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minsk Minsk], [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Exarch Exarch] of the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Orthodox_Church Moscow Patriarchate] in [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belarus Byelorus].

During [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Orthodox_Church World War II], Father Philemon was living in territory that had been [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_occupation_of_Byelorussia_during_World_War_II occupied by the Nazi-Germans]. Towards the end of the war, when the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union Soviet] [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belarusian_resistance_during_World_War_II#Soviets_enter communists arrived], he was forced to leave his home, and to travel into [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany Germany].

In Germany, he was sent to a [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Displaced_persons_camps_in_post%E2%80%93World_War_II_Europe refugee camp] where he supported many needy [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_language Russian-speaking] people spiritually (as did many other clergy in a similar situation). Later, his camp came to be within the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_occupation_zone_in_Germany, British zone], and the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_people British] moved him and his family to [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England England]. After this, he emigrated to Canada and to the city of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vancouver Vancouver], [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Columbia British Columbia].

At the time of his arrival in Vancouver, there already existed [http://orthodoxcanada.ca/Vancouver_BC_Holy_Resurrection_Russian_Orthodox_Sobor_1924 Holy Resurrection Russian Orthodox Church] in [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downtown_Vancouver central Vancouver] (at that time). However, his subsequent activities indicate that by this time, he must have become part of the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Orthodox_Church_Outside_of_Russia Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia] (ROCOR), since he did not participate in nor seem to have contact with the "mother parish" of the city.

==Establishing the community ; constructing the Temple, 1950==

The idea of creating a traditional Russian Temple had long been nurtured in the mind and heart of Father Philemon. He perceived that there was a need to erect a Temple on the picturesque corner of East 13th Avenue and Prince Albert Street in central Vancouver.

In the services to this day, the church keeps the memory of the initiators : Father Philemon Gorelik and his children, the Shestovskis, the Zotovs, the Tiunovs and many others. They are the founders, builders, philanthropists and benefactors of this holy Temple.

Thus, construction commenced on the Temple named in honour of [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Nicholas_of_Myra Saint Nicholas of Myra].

[[File:Father Philemon and parishioners blessing ground 1.jpg]] '''Father Philemon and parishioners at the blessing of the beginning of construction'''

In 1952, the construction was completed, and a second Temple of the [http://mcdiocese.com/en/ Canadian Diocese] of the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Russian_Orthodox_Church_Outside_Russia Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia] (ROCOR) was established in Vancouver. Their joy was great. Now, this [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_language Russian-speaking] community could develop, and could communicate their saving [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Introduction_to_Orthodox_Christianity Faith], [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_language language] and [https://christianhistoryinstitute.org/magazine/article/eastern-slavic-spirituality spiritual culture], the holy [https://www.oca.org/orthodoxy/the-orthodox-faith Orthodox Christian Faith]. There have always been interesting and educated priests and parishioners, who became strong workers in the parish.
==Purchase of the Holy Trinity Temple, 1954 : 2 congregations==

In 1954, Father Philemon and some parishioners bought the [[Vancouver BC Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church 1938 |Holy Trinity Temple]] on Campbell Avenue (which had been built by [http://orthodoxcanada.ca/Archpriest_Alexander_Kiziun Father A Kizyun], and which had been put up for sale after his repose). As a consequence, Father Philemon and some parishioners moved to this Temple, and they developed a community on that site.

After their departure, [https://zarubezhje-narod-ru.translate.goog/rs/S_734.htm?_x_tr_sch=http&_x_tr_sl=ru&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=sc Hieromonk Seraphim (Popov)] was assigned to serve at the Temple of Saint Nicholas.

[[File:IgumenSerafim(Popov).png]] '''Igumen Seraphim (Popov)'''

He was followed later by other priests.

In 1980, [https://zarubezhje-narod-ru.translate.goog/gi/D_302.htm?_x_tr_sch=http&_x_tr_sl=ru&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=wapp Archpriest Peter Dubovik] arrived from [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe Europe], and he was assigned to serve this parish. He had graduated from the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Orthodox_Theological_Seminary_(Warsaw,_Poland) Faculty of Theology] in [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warsaw Warsaw], [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poland Poland].

==Construction of extensions==

In the early 1990s, the Temple was enlarged and rebuilt in the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruciform form of a Cross]. The parish does not have large financial opportunities, but the parishioners warmly invested their share in the construction. The Temple was no longer a modest and small structure, but rather a substantial Temple which was able to welcome many more people.

==Reconciliation of the ROCOR and the Moscow Patriarchate, 2007==

On the Feast of the [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Ascension Ascension of Christ] (17 May, 2007), [http://orthodoxcanada.ca/Metropolitan_Laurus_(Skurla) Metropolitan Laurus (Škurla)], along with many of the clergy of the ROCOR, participated in the signing of the “[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Act_of_Canonical_Communion_with_the_Moscow_Patriarchate Act of Canonical Communion]” in [https://www.britannica.com/place/Moscow Moscow], [https://www.britannica.com/place/Russia Russia]. ==90th anniversary of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, 2010==

In 2010, the Parish of Saint Nicholas celebrated joyfully [https://www.synod.com/synod/eng2010/11entoronto90yrs.html the 90th anniversary of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad] (or "Outside Russia", as it is also called). Many people came, including the [https://www.vancouver-consular.com/Consulate/Russia-in-Vancouver Honourary Consul of the Russian Federation in Vancouver], Mr. [https://virani.ca/team/alexander-bardin/ Alexander Ivanovich Bardin] and his family. Reports on the history of the Russian Church Abroad were read, and then Alexander Ivanovich congratulated all parishioners on this historical anniversary.

The festival featured a performance by the Russian ensemble “Serebro” and the choir of Saint Nicholas Church. Russian songs were performed ; and there was a very friendly and warm atmosphere, which created a desire for everyone to stay together until the evening.

==Archpastoral visitation of Archbishop Gabriel (Chemodakov), 2018==

On 24 May, 2018, [http://orthodoxcanada.ca/Archbishop_Gabriel_(Chemodakov) Archbishop Gabriel (Chemodakov)] made an archpastoral visit to the parish of Saint Nicholas in Vancouver, British Columbia. He served the Hierarchical [https://orthodoxwiki.org/Divine_Liturgy Divine Liturgy] together with the parish clergy ; and there followed a [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procession Cross-procession] about the Temple, and the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_water_in_Eastern_Christianity blessing] of a Holy Cross out-of-doors, on a wall of the Temple.
