It is important to understand that Paul’s disposition in conversations with others, particularly about the Orthodox Christian Faith, was always from the perspective of respect for the views and experience of others.  At the same time, he did not compromise the Orthodox Faith ; but rather, he attested to it faithfully, and with invitation.

Paul Ladouceur (1944-2025)

Early life of Paul Ladouceur

Paul Ladouceur was born in 1944 in Québec, Canada, to Léopold Ladouceur-Vernier and Jacqueline Cloutier (married 31 May, 1941), a French-Canadian Roman Catholic family. There followed other children, Micheline, Lise, and Denise.

They were raised as Christians in the Roman Catholic Church in Québec, and there he received his primary and secondary education. Then he followed an academic path in university, in the field of political science.

Higher education

Paul completed doctoral studies at the University of Sussex, in Falmer, Brighton, Sussex, England. He was researching political regionalism in Ghana.

From there, he received a doctoral degree on the basis of a thesis regarding this subject.

This research project formed him in his lifelong commitment to methodological rigour, and social justice.

Thereafter, he began a distinguished career in international development with the Canadian government, and the World Health Organisation.

However, by the 1990s, he left the public service in order to pursue what he perceived as a deeper spiritual calling.

Entry to the Orthodox Christian Church

In 1994, after a period of inquiry and exposure to the Orthodox Christian Church in Montréal, Québec, and in France, Paul Ladouceur was received into the Orthodox Christian Church in a French-speaking Orthodox community in France.

Subsequently, Paul became one of the most prolific Orthodox theologians in terms of writing, in both the English-speaking and French-speaking worlds.

After he had entered the Orthodox Christian Church, Paul participated in 2 of the parishes in Montréal, Québec, Saint-Benoit-de-Nursie, and Sign of the Theotokos.

He settled domestically in Rawdon, Québec, where there was the Monastic Skete of Saint Seraphim, and the Parish of Saint Seraphim.

Bereavement

On 13 July, 1996, Paul’s father, Léopold Ladouceur-Vernier, reposed at Saint-Jérôme, Matane, Québec, aged 83 years.

Bereavement

On 9 March, 2006, Paul’s mother Jacqueline reposed in Montréal, Québec, aged 94 years.

On 14 March, 2006, the funeral service was offered at the church of Sacré-Coeur de Ste-Thérèse, Sainte-Thérèse, Québec.

Education through internet, writing, talks : “Pages orthodoxes”

Paul’s public service on the internet, in particular the Orthodox Christian web-site “Pages orthodoxes de la Transfiguration” (Transfiguration Orthodox Pages), has provided resources to thousands of people in the francophone world. His work offered theological clarity, spiritual depth, and liturgical resources – both to researchers, and to the Faithful.

Eventually, he became very active in, and he co-operated regularly with, “ACER-MJO” (“Action Chrétienne des Étudiants Russes-Mouvement de Jeunesse Orthodoxe” (“Russian Student Christian Movement-Orthodox Youth Movement”), and he participated in the 2022 camp. It is useful to recall that Saints Marie (Skobtsova), Élie Fondaminsky, Priest Dimitri Klépinine, Youri Skobtsoff, and Jean Lagovsky, all martyrs, were members of this movement. Within the Russian Vicariate of the Metropolis of Gaul of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Paul led a catechesis session on Saint Marie of Paris ; he participated in a pilgrimage to Bucovina (Romania) in 2024, and he wrote articles in the “Cahiers du Vicariate” (“Vicariate Notebooks”) in 2024 and 2025.

Trinity College Orthodox Programme Toronto

He was an adjunct professor at the Orthodox School of Theology at Trinity College (University of Toronto), and at the Faculté de théologie et de sciences religieuses, Université Laval (Québec). His areas of research, teaching and writing were primarily Orthodox theology, ecclesiology, and spirituality since the eighteenth century.

His edited books included French translations of writings of Saint Maria of Paris (Sainte Marie de Paris, Le Jour du Saint Esprit (Paris, Le Cerf, 2011), and of Father Lev Gillet (Lev Gillet, Le Pasteur de nos âmes (Paris, YMCA Press/De Guibert, 2008.). His most recent book was “Modern Orthodox Theology : Behold, I Make All Things New” (London : T&T Clark, 2019), and he co-edited, with Brandon Gallaher, “The Patristic Witness of Georges Florovsky : Essential Theological Writings” (London : T&T Clark, 2019 ; in Romanian, 2021).

Canadian Council of Churches

Dr. Ladouceur participated also in the Canadian Council of Churches on behalf of the Archdiocese of Canada of The Orthodox Church in America.

Because he was concerned about helping the Orthodox Christian Faith be better understood by others, and because he had experience in dialogues, he was willing to fulfil this responsibility when his predecessor retired.

He also served as the Orthodox co-chair of the Orthodox-Pentecostal Academic Dialogue.

Dr. Ladouceur authored the widely acclaimed book “Modern Orthodox Theology” (2019), a landmark synthesis of theological currents from the Russian Religious Renaissance through the neopatristic revival and into contemporary debates on theosis, ecclesiology, and anthropology. His clear, accessible writing (deeply shaped by the example of his mentor, Metropolitan Kallistos (Ware)) helped countless readers navigate the complex landscape of 20th and 21st-century Orthodox thought and writing.

Beyond scholarship, Dr. Ladouceur was a tireless translator and advocate for under-represented voices. He helped to introduce English-speaking audiences to the work of Father Sergius Bulgakov, Saint Maria of Paris, and the often-overlooked theologian Myrrha Lot-Borodin. His efforts extended to promoting the contributions of Orthodox women, exploring comparative theology, and fostering ecumenical relationship.

Paul Ladouceur gave a presentation on the Saturday as he illuminated the life and legacy of Saint Maria of Paris for them. He provided new detail and fresh perspective on the life of Saint Maria.

Attendees, representing a tapestry of backgrounds from across the Greater Hamilton/Toronto area, engaged attentively, fostering a dynamic atmosphere of learning and reflection. Even those well-versed in Saint Maria's story found themselves enriched by these new insights.

Paul Ladouceur described

During his later years, Paul Ladouceur served as an adjunct within the Faculty of Divinity of Trinity College, University of Toronto, and also as a teacher at the Institut de théologie orthodoxe de Montréal, Québec.

He was described as “a towering figure in the study of modern Orthodox theology”. His scholarly work, pastoral sensitivity and unflagging commitment to ecumenical dialogue left an indelible mark on generations of students, clergy and theologians across the globe. In his writing and speaking about the Orthodox Church, he was honest in admitting the short-comings of her authorities. His concern was nevertheless to show the Orthodox Christina Faith in open and honest dialogue with others. It was largely because of his participation (together with that of Professor Richard Schneider and John Hadjinicolaou) that the Archdiocese of Canada began to grow into a mature self-understanding, and the ability to express the life of the Church clearly to others.

His efforts extended to promoting the contributions of Orthodox women, exploring comparative theology, and fostering ecumenical relationships – especially through his involvement with the Canadian Council of Churches and the Orthodox-Pentecostal dialogue.

Repose

On Friday, 13 June, 2025, Dr. Paul Ladouceur fell asleep in the Lord in Montréal, Québec.

Reflections

A gentle soul with a profound intellect, Paul was known not only for his deep theological insight but also for his warmth, humility and humour. He was an avid outdoorsman, often retreating to nature for cross-country skiing and hiking – places where he encountered the quiet presence of the God he so faithfully served.

Dr. Ladouceur will be remembered as a beloved friend and colleague, a mentor for whom ecumenical dialogue was a profound spiritual calling, a gifted conversationalist with a gentle and wry sense of humour, and a generous soul who was always willing to listen, to engage, to cherish differences, and to strive towards mutual understanding and unity.
