Bien que cette ville ait une fondation et une histoire françaises évidentes, la langue anglaise s’est longtemps imposée et la ville est devenue une porte d’entrée principale pour l’immigration. Avec l’immigration, les chrétiens orthodoxes ont commencé à arriver au vingtième siècle. Avec le temps, certains se sont installés dans la ville. Les premières communautés à s’établir furent bien entendu sur une base ethnique : la communauté russe et la communauté grecque. Beaucoup plus tard, la communauté roumaine est arrivée.

Although this city has an obvious francophone foundation and history, the English language was imposed for a long time, and the city became a main port of entry for immigration. With the immigration, Orthodox Christians began to arrive in the 20th century. In time, some settled in the city. The first communities to be established were, of course, on an ethnic basis : the Russian, and the Greek communities. Much later, there arrived the Romanian community.

Influence montréalaise

Entre-temps, à Montréal, s’était développée la paroisse francophone de Saint-Benoît-de-Nursie. Au début des années 1980, un mouvement s’est développé à Montréal, qui a donné naissance à plusieurs communautés francophones dans cette ville. Finalement, la paroisse Saint-Benoît-de-Nursie est devenue la communauté qui a persisté de 1983 à nos jours. Ce processus comportait de nombreuses difficultés (pas très différentes de celles rencontrées par n’importe quel mouvement missionnaire). Cette activité à Montréal a également eu un impact auprès des chrétiens orthodoxes de Québec, grâce aux contacts personnels qui ont existé.

Influence from Montréal

In the meantime, in Montréal, there had developed the francophone parish of “Saint Benoît de Nursie”. In the early 1980s, there was a movement that developed in Montreal, which produced several francophone communities in that city. Eventually, the parish of “Saint Benoît de Nursie” became the community that persisted from 1983 into the present. There were many difficulties involved in this process (not very different from those encountered by any missionary movement). This activity in Montréal had an effect amongst the Orthodox Christians in Québec City as well, through the personal contacts that existed.

Église orthodoxe russe Sainte Trinité

Auparavant, l’Église orthodoxe russe Sainte Trinité avait été fondée à la Ville de Québec en 1950. La population russophone de cette communauté était en même temps également francophone. Beaucoup sont restés dans la région et y ont vécu et travaillé. Cependant, pour eux (en grande partie en raison de leur histoire douloureuse et de leur arrivée en exil), ils étaient profondément soucieux de maintenir leur identité chrétienne orthodoxe spirituelle et culturelle russophone, et ils souhaitaient que leurs enfants héritent de cette expérience. Bien que le français soit devenu de plus en plus utilisé, de temps en temps, le slave de l’Église est resté primordial. Cela se renforçait à chaque fois qu’il y avait une nouvelle immigration. Tout au long de leur histoire, la communauté russe est restée dans des logements loués.

Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church

Previous to this, Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church had been founded in Québec City in 1950. The Russian-speaking population of this community were at the same time French-speaking also. Many remained in the region, and they lived and worked there. However, for them (largely related to their painful histories and arrivals as exiles), they were deeply concerned to maintain their Russian-speaking spiritual and cultural Orthodox Christian identity, and they wished their children to inherit this experience. Although French came to be used more, from time to time, Church Slavonic remained primary. This was reinforced every time there was a new immigration. Throughout their history, their parish community remained in rented quarters.

Église orthodoxe grecque Evangelismos

La Communauté chrétienne orthodoxe grecque de l’Evangelismos (l'Annonciation) a été fondée à la Ville de Québec en 1959 et a pu acheter son propre modeste logement (une maison historique) dans lequel ils ont transformé certaines pièces en chapelle. Cette communauté, semblable aux Russes, tout en vivant et travaillant dans un environnement francophone, a conservé dès le début sa foi, sa culture greque orthodoxe, et sa langue grecque. Depuis lors, la communauté est restée petite et des gens sont arrivés et ont quitté la communauté.

Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church

The Greek Orthodox Christian Community of Evangelismos (Annunciation) was established Québec City in 1959, and they were able to purchase their own modest accommodations (a historical house) in which they made some rooms into a chapel. This community, similar to the Russian, while living and working in a French-speaking environment, maintained from the beginning their Orthodox Christian Faith, culture, and language. Since that time, the community has remained small, and people have both arrived in and moved on from the community.

Saints Apôtres Pierre et Paul Église orthodoxe roumaine

En 2001, la paroisse chrétienne orthodoxe roumaine des Saints Apôtres Pierre et Paul est fondée à Québec. Cette communauté s’est établie sur des bases similaires aux 2 autres communautés. Cependant, la langue roumaine est une parente de la langue française, un détail qui pourrait contribuer à ouvrir davantage la foi chrétienne orthodoxe à la communauté francophone en général de la région. De plus, en 2012, cette communauté a pu acquérir un bâtiment religieux. Cette communauté a un prêtre résident depuis 2002.

Holy Apostles Peter and Paul Romanian Orthodox Church

In 2001, the Romanian Orthodox Christian parish of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul was established in Québec City. This community established itself on a similar basis to the other 2 communities. However, the Romanian language is a relative of the French language, a detail which may help more to open the Orthodox Christian Faith to the general francophone community of the region. In addition, in 2012, this community was able to purchase a church building. This community has had a resident priest since 2002.

C’est dans ce contexte que la mission de Saint-Hilaire-de-Poitiers a été créée en 2019. Dans sa création, cette communauté a reflété la réponse francophone positive à la communauté orthodoxe. La mission de Saint-Hilaire-de-Poitiers est devenue une présence chrétienne dans la région de Québec.

It is in this context that the Saint Hilary of Poitiers Orthodox Mission, Québec City, Québec, was established in 2019. In its establishment, this community reflected the positive francophone response to the Orthodox Christian presence in the Québec City region.

Toutes et tous sont les bienvenus !

The Saint Hilary of Poitiers Orthodox Community aims to help the Orthodox Christian Church flourish in Québec City, Canada. It has a place of worship making it possible to serve, in French, the spiritual needs of the Orthodox Christians there, whatever their origin. Everyone is welcome !

Visite archipastorale, Archpastoral visitation, 2021

Le dimanche 22 août, 2021, Monseigneur Irénée (Rochon) a visité la mission Saint Hilaire de Poitiers à la ville de Québec. Il a servi la Divine Liturgie à la mission. L’archiprêtre Nectaire Féménias et le diacre Denis Letunovsky ont concélébré avec l’archêveque.

Après la Divine Liturgie, la congrégation a fait un pique-nique sur la pelouse devant l’église, à l’ombre des arbres.

On Sunday, 22 August, 2021, Archbishop Irénée (Rochon) visited Saint Hilaire de Poitiers Mission in Québec City. He served the Divine Liturgy in the mission, and he was assisted by Archpriest Nectaire Féménias and Deacon Denis Letunovsky.

Following the Divine Liturgy, the congregation had a picnic lunch on the lawn outside the church, in the shade of the trees.

Du centre-ville de Québec, empruntez la route 175 Sud en passant par Saint-Roch jusqu’à l’échangeur avec l’autoroute 40 Ouest. Suivez la bretelle à droite sur l’autoroute 40 Ouest (vers Jean-Lesage/Montréal/Pont P-Laporte). Continuez jusqu’au boulevard de l’Ormière à Les Rivières. Prendre la sortie 308 de l’autoroute 40 : Rue Armand-Viau/Boulevard Masson/Boulevard de l’Ormière. Au premier carrefour, tourner à gauche sur le boulevard de l’Ormière. Continuez sur le boulevard de l’Ormière, qui devient le boulevard Masson. La destination est à gauche. Si vous arrivez à la rue de Musset, vous êtes allé trop loin.

From downtown Québec City, drive on Route #175 S through Saint-Roch until the interchange with Autoroute #40 west. Follow the ramp to the right onto Autoroute #40 West (towards Jean-Lesage/Montréal/Pont P-Laporte). Continue until Boulevard de l’Ormière in Les Rivières. Take exit #308 from Autoroute #40 : Rue Armand-Viau/Boulevard Masson/Boulevard de l’Ormière. At the first intersection, turn left onto Boulevard de l’Ormière. Drive on Boulevard de l’Ormière, which becomes Boulevard Masson. The destination is on the left. If you reach Rue de Musset (on the right), you have gone too far.
