Metropolitan Benjamin (Fedchenkov)
Metropolitan Benjamin (Fedchenkov) (1880-1961)
Benjamin may be spelt Veniamin.
Early life of Ivan Afanasievich Fedchenkov
On 12 September, 1880, Ivan Afanasievich Fedchenkov was born in the village ("selo") Vazhki, in the Tambov Governorate of the Russian Empire.
It is now known as the village Ilyinka in the Tambov Oblast.
Afanasii Fedchenkov, father of Ivan Afanasievich, came from serfs, and his mother was the daughter of a deacon. In the Fedchenkov family, 3 sons went along the spiritual path : one became a priest, the other a metropolitan, and the third graduated from a theological academy. They were all earnestly faithful.
Thus, Ivan Afanasievich and his brothers were formed as Orthodox Christians in the bosom of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Higher education
Ivan Afanasievich Fedchenkov entered the Tambov Theological Seminary, and he completed all the studies over several years.
Witness of the exhumation of Saint Seraphim of Sarov, 1903
On 11 January, 1903 (his last year of study at the Tambov Seminary), a commission headed by Metropolitan Vladimir (Boboyavlensky) of Moscow arrived in Sarov to unearth and examine the relics of Staretz Seraphim of Sarov.
Ivan Afanasievich, who was an eyewitness, much later recalled that :
The body of the saint had been subject to corruption, but the bones, which were in a perfect state of preservation, were laid out correctly. The hairs of the head and beard had also been preserved ; they were of a greyish-ginger colour. The results of the commission were transmitted to the Most Holy Synod.
In 1903, Ivan Afanasievich graduated from the Tambov Theological Seminary.
In 1907, he graduated from the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy with the “Candidate” degree in theology (Ph.D.).
Monastic tonsure, 1907
On 26 November, 1907, Ivan Afanasievich was tonsured to be a monk, and he was given the name Benjamin.
Diaconal ordination, 1907
On 3 December, 1907, Monk Benjamin (Fedchenkov) was ordained to the Holy Diaconate.
Presbyteral ordination, 1907
On 10 December, 1907, Hierodeacon Benjamin (Fedchenkov) was ordained to the Holy Priesthood.
Hieromonk Benjamin (Fedchenkov)
Pastoral-monastic service
From 1907 to 1908, Hieromonk Benjamin (Fedchenkov) served as a Professorial Fellow in the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy in the Department of Scriptural History.
In 1908, he was assigned to serve as the personal secretary of Archbishop Sergiy (Stragorodsky), Archbishop of the Diocese of Finland.
In 1910, he was assigned to serve as the Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology, Homiletics and Asceticism in the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy.
On 15 November, 1911, Hieromonk Benjamin (Fedchenkov) was assigned to serve as the inspector of the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy.
On 21 December, 1911, he was assigned to serve as the rector of the Tavris (Kherson) Theological Seminary.

On 26 December, 1911, Hieromonk Benjamin (Fedchenkov) was elevated to the dignity of archimandrite.
On 26 August, 1913, Archimandrite Benjamin (Fedchenkov) was assigned to serve as the rector of the Tver Theological Seminary.
In 1914, while still in Tver, he was assigned to serve in the preparation for the uncovering of the relics of Saint Pitirim of Tambov. He participated in the service of the glorification of Saint Pitirim on 28 July, 1914.
During 1917-1918, he served as an elected member of the lower clergy participating in the First Moscow Sobor.
In 1918, he was again assigned to be the rector of the Theological Seminary at Tavris (Kherson) in what had been the Tavris (Tauridia) Governorate.
In the autumn of 1918, he was elected to be a member of the Council of Churches of the Kherson schools and monasteries, and he was also elected by the Holy Synod of the Moscow Patriarchate to become a vicar-bishop.
Episcopal ordination, 1919
On 10 February, 1919, Archimandrite Benjamin (Fedchenkov) was ordained to the Holy Episcopate. He was ordained by Archbishop Dimitry (Abashidze) of Tavris, and by Bishop Gabriel (Chepur) of Chelyabinsk, Bishop Barlaam (Ryashentsev) of Gomel, Secretary of the Ukrainian Synod of Bishops, by Bishop Nestor (Anisimov) of Kamchatka, and others.
Episcopal service
Upon his ordination, Bishop Benjamin (Fedchenkov) was assigned to be the Bishop of Sebastopol, Vicar-Bishop of the Taurian Diocese, by order of Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Autonomous Church, with the consent of Patriarch Tikhon (Belavin).
In 1919, he lectured at the Tauride (Tavride) University in the Department of Theology (Kherson).
From 1919-1920, he served as the bishop of the chaplaincy to the Armed Forces in the south of Russia.
From 1919-1921, he was a member of the provisional Holy Synod in Ukraine.
Exile in Crimea, 1920
Vladyka Benjamin supported the White Movement of the Russian Civil War and he closely cooperated with General (Baron) Pyotr Nikolayevich Wrangel's army of the Crimean peninsula.
Bishop Benjamin emigrated in November, 1920, together with the defeated soldiers of the White Army and other fugitives who were evacuated from the region.
Loyalty to the Moscow Patriarchate
On 7 November, 1920, during the greatly increasing persecution, Patriarch Tikhon (Belavin) took the precaution of issuing "Ukase" No. 362, which provided for the temporary organisation of dioceses cut off from the patriarchate.
Further exile outside Russian territory, 1920
In 1920, Bishop Benjamin was assigned by the Holy Synod to the Government of the South Russia Council of Ministers led by General P N Wrangel. Continuing to be a bishop, he was a member of the "Russian Council" when General Wrangel emigrated and the army scattered to various countries in November. Subsequently, he lived in Constantinople, Bulgaria, Serbia and other Western European countries.
In 1921, he served as chairman of the Pre-Council Meeting (or diocesan assembly) in Constantinople in advance of the Karlovci Council.
In 1921, Vladyka Benjamin prepared for the November Karlovci Sobor (assembly) in Sremski-Karlovtsi, Serbia, which began to organise the spiritual life of the exiled members of the Russian Orthodox Church.
In 1922, from the Ecumenical Patriarch Meletios (Metaxakis), he brought to the Karlovtsy bishops notification of the desire for peace between the Greek and Bulgarian Churches, as reported by the Synod (there were many tensions resulting from border-shifts that followed the end of World War I).
In February of 1922, the Soviet government issued a decree about the seizure of ecclesiastical properties.
In March, 1922, the "Living Church" was invented by the Soviets to be an impostor church in opposition to the patriarchate. Patriarch Tikhon was then put under "house-arrest" in the Donskoy Monastery in Moscow. The disgraceful "Trial of the Fifty-four" was conducted on 5 May, 1922. During the trial, and with great self-control and dignity, Patriarch Tikhon declared from the witness stand that
These people did their duty ; they acted on my orders, so they are not guilty of anything. I accept their guilt myself. Try me.
Following this sham trial, Patriarch Tikhon (Belavin) issued an "ukase" on 22 April/5 May, which declared the Karlovci group to be illegal, and gave Metropolitan Evlogiy (Georgievsky) full authority over the entire church abroad. After this declaration, Bishop Benjamin resigned from the Ukrainian Synod of Bishops, and he settled in the Petkovica monastery founded by him in Serbia. This was in the town of Šabac, where about 25 Russian-speaking brethren gathered.
From 1923 to 1924, Vladyka Benjamin served as the Vicar-Bishop to the Czech Archbishop Savvatii (Vrabets) in Trans-Carpathia.
In 1924, he returned to Serbia and he was assigned to be a religious teacher in the Russian Don Army Cadet Corps, with his residence in the Petkovica Monastery.
In 1925, Vladyka Benjamin was summoned by Metropolitan Evlogiy (Georgievsky) to Paris to be an inspector and lecturer at the newly-founded Saint Sergius Theological Institute there.
In 1927, as a consequence of the struggle and differences between the bishops Metropolitan Antony (Khrapovitsky) and Metropolitan Evlogiy (Georgievsky), and after a failed attempt to return to his homeland, Vladyka Benjamin returned to Serbia. He was assigned to be a religious teacher in the Russian Cadet Corps, the rector of the Temple, and head of the émigré pastoral theological courses.
Return to the Moscow Patriarchate, 1927
On 3 December, 1927, Vladyka Benjamin (Fedchenkov) was enrolled amongst the clergy of the Moscow Patriarchate.
In 1929, he was called back to Paris, to the institute, in view of the fact that Metropolitan Evlogiy was perceived to be a true son of the Mother Church (the Moscow Patriarchate).
However, in 1930, Metropolitan Evlogiy took part in a prayer service in London, England, which supplicated the Lord for the Christians suffering under the Soviets. Because of this, and because of the negative reaction of the Soviet government, Metropolitan Evlogiy was removed from office by Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky) (under pressure to do so), and from communion with the Russian Orthodox Church.
Metropolitan Evlogiy and his flock were received under the protection of the Patriarch of Constantinople, Photius II (Maniatis), in 1931.
Bishop Benjamin remained loyal to the mother Russian Church, and he immediately began to organise the Patriarchal Orthodox Church in Paris and in other cities having a presence of the Patriarchal Russian Orthodox Church abroad.
In 1931, he was assigned to be the rector of the Moscow Patriarchal Church in Paris.
On 19 April, 1932 Bishop Benjamin was elevated to the dignity of archbishop.
Visit to USA, 1933
In 1933, Archbishop Benjamin was called to lecture in America on the decree received from Metropolitan Sergius, the Patriarchal Locum Tenens, which was to clarify "the position of" Metropolitan Platon (Rozhdestvensky) in America. Metropolitan Platon rejected the request by Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky) (locum tenens of the Moscow Patriarchate) to pledge "loyalty" to the Soviet government (although that "loyalty" was mainly described by patriarchal representatives in terms of "not engaging in anti-Soviet political activism"). In response to that rejection, the Moscow Patriarchate had declared Metropolitan Platon to be in schism. He was deposed "in absentia" before an ecclesiastical court in Russia.
At that same time, the Russian Exarchate of North America was established, whose bishop was regarded by Russia at that time as being the rightful canonical successor. Archbishop Benjamin therefore remained in the USA, first as the administrator, and then as the ruling bishop.

Exarch of North and South America, 1933
On 22 November, 1933, Archbishop Benjamin was assigned to be the Exarch of the Exarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church in the USA, with the title “Archbishop of the Aleutian Islands and North America”.
In 1933, Archbishop Benjamin was given the right to wear a diamond (usually glass) Cross on the klobuk.
The Russian Exarchate of North and South America The Russian Exarchate of North and South America was the distinct name of the group of parishes of the Russian mission in America which recognised the canonical authority of the Church of Russia during the period of the declaration of schism by the Patriarchate over the Russian Metropolia. It existed from 1933, when Metropolitan Platon (Rozhdestvensky) of New York was dismissed by the Patriarchate, to 1970, when the interdiction was lifted by Moscow and autocephaly granted to the Metropolia. At that time, the Exarchate was officially dissolved. The parishes of the Exarchate which remained under the canonical protection of the Patriarchate after the grant of autocephaly came under the jurisdiction of an auxiliary bishop in what is known as the Russian Orthodox Church in the USA. There is a similar administration in Canada. During its existence, the Exarchate participated in the 'Standing Commission of Orthodox Bishops in the Americas', especially in the person of Metropolitan John (Wendland) of New York and the Aleutians.
On 14 July, 1938, Archbishop Benjamin (Fedchenko) was elevated to the dignity of metropolitan.

World War II ; return, 1945
In the course of World War II (1939-1945), during the “Great Patriotic War” (1941-1945) (called in the West the "Eastern Front" or the "Nazi German-Soviet War"), Metropolitan Benjamin worked in favour of assisting Russia (meaning the Soviet Union).
In 1945, Metropolitan Benjamin was summoned to the local council of the patriarchate in Moscow for the election of the patriarch.

He also participated in the meetings of the Patriarchs and representatives to the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Moscow and Russia (Moscow Patriarchate) on the proposed topics :
a) the Vatican and the Orthodox Church
b) the ecumenical movement and the Orthodox Church
c) the Anglican church hierarchy
d) the church calendar

Reflections
It is useful to be aware that Metropolitan Benjamin's earlier formation had included the facts that he had met and talked with the Emperor Nicholas II (Romanov) and his wife Empress Alexandra Feodorovna ; with Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky) (subsequently patriarch) ; with Metropolitan Antony (Khrapovitsky) ; with Archbishop Feofan (Bystrov) ; with General P N Wrangel ; Metropolitan Anthony (Bloom) of Surozh. He met 3 times with the holy and righteous Father John of Kronstadt, and besides this, he acted as server for Saint John once at the Divine Liturgy. He was spiritually close with the Optina Elder Nectary, and with Saint Luke (Voino-Yasenetsky), the Archbishop of Simferopol and Crimea.
Some words of Vladyka Benjamin • The highest miracle, first of all, is God Himself. And after God, all miracles are small and insignificant. • And where the Lord is, there wonders are not only possible, but necessary. • The wisdom of God is wiser than us ! • Just pray, just ask - and He will arrange everything. • After all, God only wants to give, to sanctify, to save, to deliver us ! And besides, He does all this Himself, and all we can do is ask Him : to pray ! • And even the sinner is not required in prayer to accomplish either something special or something reinforced by one's own struggle, but only to ask : leave, forgive, cut !!! The only condition is - 'as we forgive'. And in the other petitions, no more of our affairs is put. Just pray, just ask ! And He will arrange everything.
At some time after his repose, a movement began towards a hoped-for glorification of Metropolitan Benjamin (Fedchenko) as a saint.
